Section 2.1 Earth's Crust in Motion (back to homepage)
*Vocabulary*
*earthquake*- the trembling and shaking that results from the movement of rock beneath Earth's surface
*stress*- a force that acts on rock that changes its shape or volume
*shearing*- stress that pushes a mass of rockin opposite directions
*tension*-a type of stress that pulls on the crust, stretching it so it becomes thin in the middle
*compression*-stress that squeezes/squishes rock until it folds or breaks
*deformation*-any change in the size and shape of Earth's crust
*fault*-a break in Earth's crust where big of small slabs of rock slip past each other
*strike-slip fault*-a fault where the rocks on either side of the fault slip past each other sideways with little up or down movement
*normal fault*- a fault that is at an angle so that the hanging wall hangs downward; caused by tension
*reverse fault*-a fault where the hanging wall is actually slides upward
*fault-block mountain*- a mountain that is formed when a normal fault lifts a block/slab of rock
*fold*-a bend in rock that is formed where part of the Earth's crust is compressed
*plateau*-a type of landform that has more or less level surface; is elavated high above sea level Outline
